چکیده
Preterm Birth: Introduction Low birthweight defines neonates who are born too small, and preterm or premature birth are the terms used to define neonates who are born too early. With respect to gestational age, a newborn may be preterm, term, or postterm. With respect to size, a newborn may be normally grown or appropriate for gestational age, small in size or small-for-gestational age, or overgrown and consequently large-for-gestational age. In recent years, the term small-for-gestational age has been widely used to categorize newborns whose birthweight is usually below the 10th percentile for gestational age. Other frequently used terms have included fetal growth restriction or intrauterine growth restriction. The term large-for-gestational age has been widely used to categorize newborns whose birthweight is above the 90th percentile for gestational age, and the term appropriate-for-gestational age designates newborns whose weight is between the 10th and 90th percentiles. Thus, infants born before term can be smallor large-for-gestational age but still fit the definition of preterm.

Clinical Risk Factors for Preterm Birth
1.1 Definitions Preterm birth (PTB) refers to the birth of a baby that occurs before 37 completed weeks of gestation. PTB can be further sub-categorized as late preterm delivery34 to 36 completed weeks gestation, moderately preterm32 to 34 completed weeks, very pretermless than 32 weeks, and extremely pretermless than 28 weeks gestation (Lockwood, et al., 2011). Preterm birth can also be define...
متن کاملObstetric management of moderate and late preterm labour.
Moderate and late preterm births account for the majority of preterm babies. The common perception that birth at 32-36 weeks' gestation carries few risks is now being challenged, as these babies have increased risk of neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, spontaneous labour at this gestation frequently has no specific, easily identifiable precursor, although preterm birth per se has a numb...
متن کاملBody Mass Index Change between Pregnancies and Risk of Spontaneous Preterm Birth.
Objective Studies have reported an increased risk of spontaneous preterm birth associated with elevated prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) among nulliparous but not multiparous women. We examined whether changes in BMI and weight between pregnancies contributed to risk of preterm birth among obese (BMI > 29 kg/m(2)) women. Study Design This study utilized maternally linked California birth reco...

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of prophylactic vaginal progesterone in decreasing preterm birth rate and neonatal complications in a high-risk population. Materials and Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled study included 100 high-risk singleton pregnancies( prior preterm birth, short cervix, uterine malformations and large intramural uterine m...
متن کاملP-179: The Role of Fetal Sex on Preterm Labor
Background: Preterm labor is a major problem in obstetric practice. Rates of preterm birth vary between different populations and ethnic groups. In maternal fetal medicine, gender differences in outcome are often observed. Epidemiologic studies have suggested that the incidence of preterm birth is also higher in pregnancies carrying a male fetus. The purpose of this article is to review the evi...
